The Rise of SPACs: Are They Here to Stay?
Overview
Special Purpose Acquisition Companies (SPACs) have taken the financial world by storm in recent years. These “blank check” companies, created solely to raise capital through an IPO for the purpose of acquiring an existing company, have become a popular alternative to traditional IPOs. What is a SPAC?
A SPAC is a shell company with no commercial operations, formed strictly to raise capital through an IPO. The funds raised are held in a trust until the SPAC identifies a target company to merge with, effectively taking the target company public.
